On the afternoon of 3 March 2022, the torch relay for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games was held in Beijing. Zhu Shijie, the chief technician for the Ningbo Zhoushan port, an outstanding OUC alumnus, and winner of such honours as “Craftsman of the Year” and “National Model Worker”, participated as one of the torch bearers.

“As I grasped the torch, a surge of excitement filled me such as I had not experienced in over a decade.” It was his second torch relay, his first having taken place in 2008, when he was named first-relay torch bearer from Ningbo city for the Beijing Summer Games.

Zhu Shijie waved while holding high the golden torch. He said cheerfully, “Craftsmanship calls for ‘improvement, dedication and innovation’, similar to the Olympic spirit of ‘faster, higher and stronger’. I hope more and more technicians embrace the traits of responsibility, hard work and fearlessness.”

He also said that he “felt very honoured to be selected, and inspired to strive for greater achievements.”

Over more than two decades as a bridge-crane technician, Zhu Shijie has dedicated himself to improvement, with his innovation, the “Zhu Shijie bridge-care operations”, helping drivers operate a huge 49-metre bridge crane and lift and unload containers with stability, accuracy and efficiency. He has also led a team in over 30 other innovative projects, and the training centre named after him, the “Zhu Shijie Innovation Practical Training Centre” has been named a “National Innovative Training-demonstration Centre for Model Workers and Craftsmen”.
